“The loss of my child was devastating to me.” — Major General Aderonke Kale
The late Major General Aderonke Kale was a Nigerian army psychiatrist who became the first female major general in the history of Nigeria to command the Nigerian army.
I am forever grateful for the gift of this interview before Mama’s passing. In her firm and calm voice, Mama shared with me her journey into the Nigerian army, especially as a psychiatrist. She told me how she never planned to stay for long in the Nigerian army, but life happened and her decisions were clearer.
Major Kale, who passed away at age 84, shares with me the devastating loss of her child and how she has mastered being strong all alone. She said, despite being a psychiatrist, she didn’t seek help at the time because she was strong enough.
While in the Nigerian army, Major Kale said she didn’t get her due promotion in the army for many years.
She mentions her gender as one of the reasons. “They just forgot about me,” she says.
