“I felt the pain in mother’s voice after opening up to her” – Toyin Falaiye
It was during the long-term holiday break, just before I was going to start my SS3 and my mother called me into her room and handed me a bible. She asked, “What have you been doing with my husband?”. That came to me as a shock because I knew Daddy was manipulative and a core narcissist. I felt he had gone to change the story and my immediate response was “Nothing”. She asked the second time and I said the same thing. The third time she asked, she said “What has my husband been doing to you?”. That sounded like the question I could answer, but I could not tell her how bad it was and all the gory things that went on with my body.
I just told her that Daddy was touching me and she screamed, “Why didn’t you tell me?” – In Yoruba, the words were deeper and I could see the pain in her eyes and hear it in her voice. I think this is where my pain started.
