Before the age of 23, this young man had seen the worst of the underbelly of my city, Lagos.
He left school. He left home. He sold illegal substances. He got arrested. He went to the dreaded Panti, spent jail time in the dreaded Kirikiki, narrowly escaped a four-year sentence, and ended up in the throes of the vile SARS.
Then, by a stroke of luck, himself and fellow inmates found an opportunity – and a jailbreak followed.
For this one, we had to take multiple precautions – including checking again with the guest, checking again with his guardian, and then holding this for a while long after both have left town and so there is plenty distance between the events and the publishing of this interview. ‘Clinton’ is also not his name.
I am very thankful to him for sharing his story with me.
These stories deeply matter.
