“I had no idea that ‘Far From Home’ and ‘Battle on Bukka Street’ were going to happen at the same time. We got paid months before that happened. It felt like the stars aligned in a way. At some point, I felt like I had made it, and it wasn’t even about the money. It was a full-circle moment for me.
I would like to express my gratitude to my aunt, Arinola, who took me to my first movie when I was six. It was a Yoruba film called ‘Iyan ogun odun’ starring Funsho Adeolu, and we watched it at the National Cinema. I don’t even remember asking her to take me there, but I’ve been fortunate to have great uncles and aunts in my life. I have no bad stories to tell about them because they’ve been nothing but good to me.
During that cinema experience, I witnessed how the Yoruba actors captivated the audience. Seeing their impact on people made me realize the beauty of it all. Little did I know that I would have a career in the same industry. I later had the opportunity to do press releases with Funke Akindele and the rest of the cast, and then we would watch the movie with the fans. Witnessing the audience’s reactions to my character in the film made me realize that this was happening to me too. It struck me when I returned home and watched a Steven Spielberg movie, where he talked about his journey into the film industry that started when he was a child. I realized that this was also my story.
I understood that there might be a child somewhere who is inspired to become an actor because they watched me in a movie. I went from being the small kid at the cinema to being the kid on the screen, where another child is watching and getting inspired. That’s when I felt like I had accomplished something, and the stars had truly aligned. It is a beautiful story, and I am immensely grateful.
When I met Funsho Adeolu, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. He had no idea of his impact on me as I watched him while growing up. I had to pay my respects because he didn’t even know what he had done, yet he influenced me.”
