Skales Speaks on His Inspiring Story of Surviving Criticism and Achieving Greatness.
There was a time I went on Twitter and saw people comparing me to Two Hundred Naira and of course, I was under the shadow of two of the biggest artists at that time. So, there was pressure – I had to come through. Sometimes, I would release my music, and when I check YouTube and other platforms, the first set of comments are insults. Many times, I would just stop reading the comment, start feeling bad and ask myself what I was doing wrong. At the time, I did not know that there were people that thought that what I just put out was my most amazing work yet.
I don’t know how I survived all that – It was crazy. But one thing that kept me going is the knowledge of the fact that I came all the way from Kaduna to Lagos and I was from a very poor family. We lived in a kitchen – It was where my mummy also sold things. I used to sleep under the sink where plates were washed. There was no bed; it was a mat with a wrapper on top and I survived all that. So, for me to have the opportunity to be here, I always saw the need to work harder.
