“Architecture is a functional art, not science as many Nigerians think.” — Jumoke Adenowo

I thought I knew her, but I had only scratched the surface. I thank her for the privilege and courage of vulnerability.
It’s Jumoke Adenowo like you have never seen or heard her before.

In this interview, Jumoke explained why she left other residences to stay in Nigeria. She also broke down in tears to talk about the demise of her father and how she has been coping.

Here is a glimpse to what she feels about Architecture in Nigeria!

“In this society, with all humility – you know I love my country, I gave up all kinds of residences to be here, I love Nigeria. I really do, I’m patriotic – (but) the problem is we are not really practicing architecture to a large degree. It’s more pseudo-engineering. It’s more buildings that are functional, that house people, that house functions.

“It’s not about that art, so we see architecture as a science and not an art (when it is) actually the interface between science and art. It is functional art. It is art to live in, it is 3 dimensional art and when I practice it, it is four dimensional art because there’s a 4th dimension to my architecture which is time.”

How she’s coping with the news of her father’s demise!

“I haven’t spoken about my dad on camera or any other place because my dad and I we’re really close.

“I can’t say how it was for me because I don’t even know how it is for me yet, you understand what I’m saying.

“I was with him till just a few hours before he stopped breathing and it was really… we were very close. I left for a few hours so they had to tell my mom he had passed before I could get there to tell her and she said how would Jumoke cope and I thought ‘What do you mean how would I cope, it’s your husband who died’.

“Now I understand what she meant by ‘how would Jumoke cope’.”
