“I don’t think Fela died happy; he was disillusioned with what was going on in Nigeria.” — Yeni Kuti
I don’t think Fela died happy.
I think he was really disillusioned with Nigeria at the time that he died. A lot of things that he sang against were actually happening. And sometimes I think, it’s even better he died then cause if he didn’t die then, he would have died now. So, I don’t think he died happy. ‘Cause he actually lived for his country.
Fela had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world, but he didn’t, he chose to live here.
That’s one thing I love my family for. We all choose to live here cause this is home, no where else is home. And he could see his country going to the dogs at that time. And that was as far back as ‘97. He had sung against Abiola and everyone went to vote for Abiola. I’m sure he was just like eh this people no go learn.
And I remember when he died, Femi made a statement at the burial. He said ‘If you love Fela, don’t vote for Obasanjo and Abiola’ and Abiola became the next president. If he hadn’t died then, he would have died then. Cause this is Obasanjo Fela has been singing about. They turned him to a hero, became president for 8years.
And I’m like God, will we every learn?
